Tortured Logic (8/6/2009)
The Bush administration never intended for their torture memos to be seen -- or heard -- by the public. Send this video to Attorney General Holder and demand that he appoint an independent prosecutor to investigate those who committed and authorized torture -- wherever the evidence leads.
Torture 101 (8/6/2009)
In a new video, Jamil Dakwar, Director of the ACLU’s Human Rights Program, explains more about international legal standards — including CAT — that criminalize acts of torture, as well as the United States’ obligations to seek accountability for torture.
Torture, America and Accountability (8/6/2009)
We are finally beginning to learn the full scope of the Bush administration's torture program. Government documents show that hundreds of prisoners were tortured in the custody of the CIA and Department of Defense, some of them killed in the course of interrogations. Justice Department memos show that the torture policies were devised and developed at the highest levels of the Bush administration.
Locking Up Immigrants Indefinitely (6/17/2009)
The Constitution guarantees every person a day in court — not just U.S. citizens — but immigrants who are awaiting a determination on their immigration status are often denied this basic due process protection.
Blocking Faith, Freezing Charity (6/16/2009)
The ACLU released a comprehensive report, Blocking Faith, Freezing Charity, documenting the consequence of U.S. government actions on American Muslims' exercise of their right to profess and practice their religion through charitable giving. The ACLU's research shows that U.S. terrorism financing policies and practices are seriously undermining American Muslims' protected constitutional liberties and violating their fundamental human rights to freedom of religion, freedom of association, and freedom from discrimination.
Challenging Web Censorship in Tennessee (5/19/2009)
You may recall last month when the ACLU First Amendment Working Group, the ACLU LGBT Project, and the ACLU of Tennessee first started schooling some school districts in Tennessee for using web filtering software that illegally blocked dozens of LGBT rights nonprofits and other informational sites — while so-called "reparative therapy" (pray away the gay!) websites were wide open to student surfing.
Liberate the Breast Cancer Genes (5/13/2009)
The government’s been allowing private companies to patent human genes. The ACLU thinks that violates the First Amendment and patent law. This is heady, complicated stuff. But when a patent creates a monopoly that restricts the free flow of information, a lot is at stake, and when we’re talking about something like genes associated with breast and ovarian cancer, real women are hurt.
40 Years Later, Tinker Protects Student Speech (2/24/2009)
The principal at Ponce De Leon High School censored Heather Gillman and other students after they began wearing clothing with rainbows and other symbols of support for gay equality in response to anti-gay harassment at the school. After a trial, a federal judge ruled in Heather's favor, finding that the school violated Heather's First Amendment rights.
A Gay Rights Life (2/6/2009)
Matt Coles, director of the ACLU LGBT Project, talks to Joel Engardio about his life working in gay rights, coming out, surviving the AIDS crisis and fighting for LGBT equality. Matt’s conversation is divided into three chapters, each four minutes long.
Secret Government Memos (1/28/2009)
Today, we sent a letter to the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) asking them to release still-secret memos that provided the legal basis for many of the Bush administration’s controversial national security policies.
Free Speech and Internet Filtering (1/26/2009)
When obscene speech and child pornography are already illegal online, what else is harmful to minors? Who decides? Watch Chris Hansen of the ACLU First Amendment Group explain the nuances of the Child Online Protection Act, which was declared unconstitutional when the Supreme Court refused to hear further appeals in January 2009.
Child Soldiers in Gitmo (1/14/2009)
Six days after the inauguration of President Obama, the U.S. is scheduled to begin the first trial of a child soldier accused of war crimes since World War II. This video shows why President Obama must take swift action to end the unconstitutional military commissions, and why he must bring the United States back in line with the rule of law and treaties it has signed regarding the treatment of juveniles who have been recruited or used in armed conflict.
JetBlue-T-Shirt Discrimination Case Settles (1/5/2009)
In a victory for the Constitution, two Transportation Security Authority (TSA) officials and JetBlue Airways have paid Raed Jarrar $240,000 to settle charges that they illegally discriminated against the U.S. resident based on his ethnicity and the Arabic writing on his T-shirt.
Jameelah Medina on Being Forced to Remove Her Hijab (12/19/2008)
This isn’t just a Muslim issue. This is also a women’s rights and a human rights issue, because when Muslim women are denied the right to wear hijab, it’s a statement that they are not free to choose how to express their beliefs. In a moving video we’ve just released, ACLU client, Jameelah Medina, spoke about her experience of being forced to remove her hijab in jail in San Bernardino County, California, and how it ignited her activism.
Freedom Alert: Why Marriage Matters (12/11/2008)
The footage might be shaky, but the experience is equally raw. See ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero as he films himself in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Anthony was at Gitmo for the military commission hearings of five detainees charged with 9/11-related crimes. The video has footage of “Camp Justice,” the multi-million dollar tent city built to house military commission observers, and the local grocery store.
Jonathan Hafetz on the Al-Marri Case (12/5/2008)
The Supreme Court will hear the case Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri, a legal resident of the United States, who has been detained in solitary confinement at a Navy brig in South Carolina since June 2003 without charge or trial.

ACLU Freedom Alert: Roe v. Wade Under Fire (10/9/2008)
We may not all feel the same way about abortion, but we can agree that these are private decisions. Everyone's life and circumstances are different; we must respect people's personal choices even if we wouldn't make the same decision. Measure 11 would take these profoundly personal decisions out of the hands of women and their families. We can't let this happen.
Freedom Alert: California Marriage in Danger! (10/8/2008)
Young Americans Talk About the Constitution (10/1/2008)

Freedom Alert: We Could Lose Marriage (9/24/2008)
If Matt Coles, the director of the ACLU LGBT Project, is worried about losing marriage in California – we should all be worried.
Great Decision in Our Transgender Discrimination Case Against the Library of Congress! (9/19/2008)
The ACLU has won our case on behalf of Diane Schroer, a retired Army Colonel who was offered a job as a terrorism research analyst at the Library of Congress, only to have the offer rescinded when she told her future supervisor that she was in the process of gender transition.
Happy Constitution Day! (9/17/2008)
Today's Constitution Day. On this day in 1787, 39 delegates signed the U.S. Constitution. (We think this is just as deserving of huge fireworks displays and parades that the Fourth of July gets, and it even has cooler weather. But we digress.) Today's a big deal for us civil liberties types.
Your Papers, Please... (9/11/2008)
The fact is, the Bush administration is on the verge of instituting such a draconian, invasive national ID system.
Make Every Vote Count (9/10/2008)
When presidential elections can be determined by only a few votes, we need to make sure that every vote counts. But an untold number of Americans are convinced their stay in prison will keep them from the voting booth for the rest of their lives.
